Size guide
Updated October 9, 2026. Every clothing, footwear, hat and glove listing that has a size chart shows it under Size & fit on the product page, with the selected option highlighted. Always choose by the measurements on the product, not by the size label alone.
Why sizes differ
- Supplier (Asian) sizing usually runs one to two sizes smaller than US labels. An item labelled XL may fit like a US medium.
- Body or garment measurements. Each chart says which it is. Body measurements match your own measurements directly. Garment measurements are taken from the item laid flat, so the item should be a little larger than your body for a comfortable fit; the size finder on the product page allows for this.
- Used and surplus items may have shrunk or been altered. Where a listing gives measurements of the actual item, trust them over the printed label.
How to measure
- Chest: around the fullest part of your chest, under the arms, with the tape level.
- Waist: where you wear your waistband. Hips: around the fullest part.
- Inseam: from the crotch seam to the bottom of the ankle on trousers that fit you well.
- Foot length: stand on paper with your heel against a wall, mark the tip of your longest toe and measure from the wall. Measure both feet late in the day and use the longer one.
- Head: around your head about 1 cm (⅜ in) above the ears and eyebrows.
- Hand: around your dominant hand at the knuckles, not including the thumb.
Shoes and boots
Shoe numbers are not consistent between US, EU, UK and Asian systems or between makers, so compare your foot length with the foot length on the product chart. In US sizing, women's sizes are usually about 1½ sizes larger than men's for the same foot. Width letters, where given, run N (narrow), R or M (regular/medium), W (wide) and XW (extra wide).
Hats
US fitted hat sizes equal your head circumference in inches divided by π. Common sizes:
| Size | Head (in) | Head (cm) | Fitted size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small | 21⅛–21½ | 53.7–54.6 | 6¾–6⅞ |
| Medium | 21⅞–22¼ | 55.6–56.5 | 7–7⅛ |
| Large | 22⅝–23 | 57.5–58.4 | 7¼–7⅜ |
| X-Large | 23½–23⅞ | 59.7–60.6 | 7½–7⅝ |
Adjustable caps list their adjustment range instead.
Gloves
Many glove makers use your hand circumference at the knuckles: numbered sizes are roughly that measurement in inches (size 8 ≈ 8 in), and letter sizes are commonly small 7–7½ in, medium 8–8½ in, large 9–9½ in and X-large 10–10½ in. Makers vary, so check the product chart when one is shown.
US military sizing
- Coats, shirts and jackets use two-part sizes such as Medium-Regular: the first word is a chest range and the second a height range (Short, Regular, Long, X-Long).
- Trousers use the same two-part sizes for waist and leg length, or waist and inseam in inches.
- Boots use US men's sizes with a width letter, such as 10 R or 10 W.
- Headwear uses fitted hat sizes or small/medium/large.
Exact ranges differ between garment types and issue years, so use the measurements on each listing.
