Umayyad Dirham

Umayyad Caliphate, Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik (AH105-125 / 724-743 CE), Silver Dirham, Wasit Mint, AH125 (743 CE). Struck during the final year of Hisham’s long and stable reign, this genuine Umayyad dirham reflects the classic Islamic monetary reform style: bold Kufic inscriptions with the central shahada and encircling Qur’anic verses. The Wasit mint, founded by al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf in Iraq, was one of the most important coin-producing centers of the Umayyad period. A historically significant coin of the early Islamic world—issued just before the death of Hisham and the transition toward the decline of Umayyad power. Mint: Wasit (Iraq) Date: AH125 = 743 CE Metal: Silver
