Byzantium: Christ Pantocrator, Millennial Kingdom (mini)(C)

Early Christians, drawing on a tradition of Jewish apocalypticism, believed that after six ”divine days“ of 1000 years each, the Millennial Kingdom would establish itself in Christ’s name and reign for ten centuries. At that time, Jesus would return to judge the living and the dead, as St. John notes in Revelation 20:–And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key to the Abyss and holding in his hand a great chain. He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. He threw him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended. –Byzantine emperors of the High Middle Ages anticipated Christ’s imminent return. Wary of offending Him, they made sure that His portrait on the coinage was larger and more pronounced that their own. Not only that, but the scyphate, or cup shape, literally places Jesus in a higher place than the emperor.–This is a billon aspron trachy that circulated in Byzantium, thought to be the Millennial Kingdom.
