In 614 CE, the Persian king Khosrau II sacked Jerusalem, conquering it for his Zoroastrian empire. His victory was short-lived; the Byzantine emperor Heraclius retook lost territories for the Christian Byzantine empire, and recovered the lost remains of the True Cross.
