The First Empire of Iran: Silver Coin of the Safavid Empire (Mini)

Safavid Persia, also known as the Guarded Domains of Iran, is considered by many historians to be the first empire of Iran. The dynasty was established in 1501 by Shah Ismail, the King of Kings, who proclaimed Twelver Shi’ism as the official imperial religion—a turning point in the history of Iran specifically and the Middle East generally. This round silver akçe was issued by Tahmasp II, the penultimate Safavid shah, who reigned from 1722-1732.
