Where is the 1922 Peace dollar mintmark? No mark, D, or S
Turn a 1922 Peace dollar over. A Denver D or San Francisco S is on the reverse, near the tip of the eagle’s tail feathers. A Philadelphia coin normally has no mintmark there; it does not carry a P.
Where is the mintmark?
Look on the reverse, below the eagle and near the tail feathers. Use a sharp, straight-on reverse photo, then enlarge the area. The date is on the obverse, so check both sides belong to the same coin before deciding its date-and-mint identity. A blurry dot or mark is not enough to call a D or S.
Does no mintmark mean an error?
No. Philadelphia 1922 Peace dollars normally have no letter. The U.S. Mint explains that a missing mintmark often identifies Philadelphia production. Do not confuse this ordinary 1922 dollar with the separate 1922 “No D” Lincoln cent variety; the denomination and design change the answer completely.
Which 1922 issues exist?
The regular 1922 Peace dollar was struck at Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco. NGC reports mintages of 51,737,000 for Philadelphia, 15,063,000 for Denver, and 17,475,000 for San Francisco. Mintage is the number made, not the number surviving in a given grade. For a normal circulated coin, a dramatic “rare no mintmark” claim deserves skepticism.
What should the listing show?
Ask for full photographs of both faces and a close reverse view of the mintmark area. Check that the item title, mint-location field, and visible letter agree. If the image does not resolve the letter, describe the mint as unconfirmed rather than guessing from a title. Compare a real D or S against issue-specific reference images; do not decide from an AI illustration.
How does mint affect price?
Price depends on the exact mint, wear, remaining luster, surface damage, cleaning, and actual comparable sales. A guide-price number for a certified Mint State example does not price a raw circulated coin. Compare the same date and mint in similar condition, then account for shipping and return terms on the sales channel.
What if the coin looks unusual?
A weak or obscured letter may reflect wear, damage, strike quality, or a photograph that lacks focus. Do not scrape or clean the area. If a potentially valuable variety is suspected, obtain a clear image and an attribution from a specialist or grading service before paying a variety premium.
