Does this Peace dollar look cleaned? A photo checklist for buyers
A single bright photo cannot establish whether a Peace dollar was cleaned. Look for fine parallel hairlines, disturbed or uneven luster, and surfaces unusually bright for the amount of wear; then compare tilted images of both faces. If the photos do not resolve the surface, ask for more images or treat the cleaning status as uncertain.
Start with the whole coin
Check the date, mint, wear, and whether the photos show both sides. A genuinely worn coin can still be attractive, and a dark or toned coin is not automatically original. Compare the fields, devices, and protected spaces under lettering. One head-on image is weak evidence because glare hides subtle surface marks.
Hairlines and luster
Improper abrasive cleaning can leave clusters of fine lines and disrupt original mint luster. NGC describes the cartwheel effect as luster moving across an uncleaned coin when it turns under a lamp. Still photos cannot reproduce that movement. Ask for tilted images or a short rotation video when luster is central to the price.
Do not mistake every line for cleaning
Bag contact, scratches, die polish, and photography artifacts have different causes. A line visible in one lighting angle alone is not a diagnosis. PCGS grading standards recognize that cleaning can range from obvious polishing to faint hairlines, so uncertainty is normal when a listing supplies only small photos.
Questions for the seller
Ask whether the coin has been polished or otherwise treated, and request clear obverse, reverse, edge, and angled-light images. Ask for the seller’s own condition observations, not a grade inferred from software. Compare value honestly
A cleaned coin is not worthless, but the surface problem may affect its collector premium. Compare completed sales of similarly impaired coins rather than applying an uncirculated guide price. For a costly raw coin, an in-person examination or a reputable grading-service opinion is safer than a photo-only verdict.
Do not try to fix the surface
Rubbing, polishing, and household cleaning can remove original surface and add more marks. NGC notes that improper cleaning cannot simply be undone. Preserve the coin as it is and obtain expert advice before any conservation of a potentially valuable piece.
