The calculation
NGC lists the classic Peace dollar at 26.73 grams, 90% silver, and 0.7734 troy ounce of actual silver weight. Formula: 0.7734 × silver spot price per troy ounce = approximate silver content value for one coin. For example, at a hypothetical $30 spot price, the calculation is $23.20. This example is arithmetic, not a current quote or an asking price.
What about worn coins?
The 0.7734 figure uses original mint specifications. A heavily worn or damaged coin can weigh less, while a scale reading by itself cannot authenticate a coin or prove its silver content. If weight is materially wrong, verify the scale, the coin’s diameter and edge, and the exact issue before making a metal claim.
Why is the asking price different?
Silver content is only a starting point. Buyers may pay more for a specific date, mint, grade, original surfaces, or eye appeal. A seller also faces marketplace fees, shipping, and risk, so an offer to purchase a coin may be below its calculated silver content value. A listed price is not a completed sale.
When should you compare collector value?
Identify the date and mint first. Then compare recent completed sales for the same issue and similar wear and surface quality. High-grade certified price guides are poor direct comparisons for raw circulated pieces. Check whether a coin has cleaning, damage, or an attributed variety before applying a premium.
