American Women quarters: build the set by design, mint, and finish
A year-and-mint album slot is not enough for American Women quarters. Five different reverses can carry the same date and mintmark. Record the woman named on the coin before you decide which slot, production figure, or sale belongs to it.

Start with the name on the reverse
The program ran from 2022 through 2025. Its changing reverses turn an ordinary handful of change into a small collection of named subjects. A collection can follow every design, a particular mint, or the women whose work interests you. Choose that boundary before buying an album or filling its spaces.
On a raw coin, read the actual reverse inscription and retain a full photograph. A listing headed “2022 Washington quarter” leaves the essential design unidentified. “Maya Angelou” is a useful identity clue, but verify it against the reverse: the Mint describes her design as raised arms with a bird and rising sun behind her. A cropped date photograph cannot establish that identity.
Two New Mexico names can describe the same honoree
The Mint’s 2022 review identifies Nina Otero-Warren as a leader in New Mexico’s suffrage movement. The production CSV uses Adelina Otero-Warren. Those labels should lead you to the same honoree rather than two album positions. The reviewed table below uses Nina and preserves the original source label alongside the count.
Name variations matter when searching sold listings. A narrow query can miss a relevant sale when the seller uses the other name. Expand the wording, then compare the actual coin photographs. Searching a broader name is useful; broadening the coin’s identity to another reverse is not.
Choose the set you actually want to complete
A one-of-each-design collection and a Philadelphia-and-Denver collection answer different questions. The latter needs two coins for each reverse. Keep mint and finish in separate columns in your checklist. Proofs and collector products deserve their own spaces and comparisons rather than being treated as substitutes for a missing circulation coin.
The table covers 40 Philadelphia and Denver design/year combinations. It is a production reference for that defined subset. It does not enumerate every collector finish or attribute a grade to any coin. If your goal includes those versions, add their exact issue identities before buying; the presence of the same honoree alone does not complete the requirement.
Read a production count with the right denominator
The Mint reports 237,600,000 Philadelphia Maya Angelou quarters and 258,200,000 Denver quarters in the preserved file. Those numbers describe separate production rows. They are not counts of survivors with clean surfaces, certified coins, or pieces showing a particular die variety.
Suppose you find an unusually sharp example. Its general production total cannot establish how many equally sharp examples survive or what buyers currently pay for them. That question requires the coin’s actual surfaces and matching sales. The production table helps identify the reference population; it does not supply the market premium.
Photograph the feature behind an error claim
Modern reverse designs place lettering near portraits, windows, plants, and other fine details. A small interruption can be a design feature, a photographic shadow, a die-related feature, or later damage. Preserve a full reverse so a close-up has a location. Then photograph the suspicious area under a second lighting angle.
For apparent doubling, ask whether the documented diagnostic matches the actual relief and placement. A repeated shelf beside a letter and a recognized doubled die are different attribution problems. Use the linked mint-error guide for that distinction. Neither the date nor a dramatic seller nickname establishes a recognized variety.
Use the checklist to choose your comparisons
Record year, reverse subject, mint, finish, raw or certified status, surfaces, and quantity offered. Search recent completed sales with those fields. Keep a certified high-grade example, a proof set, and an ordinary circulated quarter in separate comparison groups.
An attractive asking price can tell you what a seller hopes to receive. A verified sold transaction tells you what that particular offer brought. Save the date, price, shipping, and photographs that make the comparison relevant. Your finished album record should explain the coin you own, not inherit the most exciting description you found online.
Selected reviewed issue records
These catalog standards describe the named issue, not a measured specimen. The selected records below do not cover every date, mint, strike, or die variety. Reported production is labeled separately from established mintage. Unknown standards and mintage remain visible; survival estimates and certified populations are separate research questions.
