Capped Bust dimes: dentils, diameter, and 10C

The 1828 transition deserves more detail than a single date field.

The border and the collar

Large-dentil and small-dentil types divide this design, with the smaller format introduced in 1828. The reverse 10C is a practical denomination check. Earlier production is intermittent; the overall span does not establish an issue for every year.

Inspect the transition

Retain the full border and an actual diameter measurement when available. Dentils are the small toothlike elements around the edge of the design. Compare their spacing and the letter arrangement with the matching subtype reference. Wear at the rim can obscure this distinction, so a tight portrait crop is inadequate.

Price the identified type

Assess cap, hair, eagle breast, claws, and fields for wear and damage. A common late-date type coin and an early scarce die pair require different comparisons. Select the same date, format, and confirmed variety; describe an unconfirmed transitional attribution explicitly instead of choosing the more valuable form.

Selected reviewed issue records

These catalog standards describe the named issue, not a measured specimen. The selected records below do not cover every date, mint, strike, or die variety. Reported production is labeled separately from established mintage. Unknown standards and mintage remain visible; survival estimates and certified populations are separate research questions.

No issue-level specification or mintage records are published for this category yet. Verify the exact date, mint, strike, metal, and subtype in its reference before using a numerical standard.
