Susan B. Anthony dollars: an interrupted small-dollar series

The broad date span hides a long gap in production.

A small dollar with a moon reverse

Anthony’s portrait faces right, and the reverse retains the eagle-on-the-moon theme. Coins were made in 1979–1981 and again in 1999. There are no ordinary dated issues for the intervening years. Read ONE DOLLAR so a quarter-sized impression does not settle the denomination.

Border and mintmark candidates

Photograph the date, border, mintmark, and complete reverse. Wide- and narrow-rim descriptions require the matching issue reference; proof mintmark varieties also need strike-specific diagnostics. Check fields, portrait high points, and rims for wear or hairlines before using a certified comparison.

Loose coin, roll, or set

Record quantity and finish. A proof-set coin, a certified exceptional grade, and one ordinary circulated dollar are different comparisons. An unfamiliar dollar found in change is not rare solely because it is rarely used locally; current sales of the exact issue provide better evidence.

Selected reviewed issue records

These catalog standards describe the named issue, not a measured specimen. The selected records below do not cover every date, mint, strike, or die variety. Reported production is labeled separately from established mintage. Unknown standards and mintage remain visible; survival estimates and certified populations are separate research questions.

No issue-level specification or mintage records are published for this category yet. Verify the exact date, mint, strike, metal, and subtype in its reference before using a numerical standard.
