Classic Head quarter eagles: the removed motto identifies new gold
In 1834, a reverse inscription helps separate two standards.

The new lighter coin
Classic Head quarter eagles begin in 1834 without E PLURIBUS UNUM on the reverse and continue through 1839. The changed design accompanied the reduced gold standard. Record the value, portrait, motto absence, and date before selecting a mass or alloy reference.

Confirm the branch-mint candidate
Charlotte’s 1838-C is a notable challenge within this short series. Photograph the actual mintmark and the date, with the full obverse and reverse retained. A damaged letter should not become a C merely because that is the more valuable interpretation.

Assess surfaces before selecting sales
Inspect hair, band, eagle breast, wings, fields, and rims. Weak high-point striking can coexist with little circulation wear; smoothing and hairlines need separate descriptions. Compare the same date, mint, and preservation, excluding an earlier 1834 Capped Bust sale from the Classic Head group.

Selected reviewed issue records
These catalog standards describe the named issue, not a measured specimen. The selected records below do not cover every date, mint, strike, or die variety. Reported production is labeled separately from established mintage. Unknown standards and mintage remain visible; survival estimates and certified populations are separate research questions.
No issue-level specification or mintage records are published for this category yet. Verify the exact date, mint, strike, metal, and subtype in its reference before using a numerical standard.
References and review
