Indian half eagles: incuse gold and the survival of 1929
A recessed design can remain sharp while the exposed fields show handling.

Pratt’s five-dollar design
The 1908–1929 Indian half eagle shares the incuse design approach of the quarter eagle. The denomination, size, date, and mintmark keep the two coins separate. Preserve the whole reverse before applying a standard or price reference.

Where the surface is highest
Inspect exposed fields, recessed portrait and eagle, rims, and raised mintmark. Flat fields can accumulate marks while recessed details retain definition. Lighting that hides those marks can overstate preservation. Record wear, contact, and cleaning as different observations before choosing a tentative grade.

The 1909-O and 1929 questions
These are recognized difficult issues. The 1929’s production total greatly exceeds its surviving availability because much was melted. A mintage number alone cannot explain its rarity. Authenticate valuable date/mint claims, then compare the same issue and surfaces rather than an ordinary nearby date.

Selected reviewed issue records
These catalog standards describe the named issue, not a measured specimen. The selected records below do not cover every date, mint, strike, or die variety. Reported production is labeled separately from established mintage. Unknown standards and mintage remain visible; survival estimates and certified populations are separate research questions.
No issue-level specification or mintage records are published for this category yet. Verify the exact date, mint, strike, metal, and subtype in its reference before using a numerical standard.
