1921 Morgan dollar mintmark: no mark, D, or S
A 1921 Morgan dollar has its mintmark, when present, on the reverse below the wreath and above the word DOLLAR. No letter is normal for Philadelphia; D means Denver and S means San Francisco. A 1921 Morgan should not be labeled O or CC.
Find the letter on the reverse
Turn the coin to the eagle side and look below the wreath, just above DOLLAR. Inspect the full reverse first so the orientation is clear, then enlarge the central area. The year appears on the other face. A cropped or fuzzy picture cannot establish a small D or S reliably; ask for a sharper image before paying for a specific mint.
Which mints made a 1921 Morgan?
Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco struck Morgan dollars in 1921. NGC records mintages of 44,690,000, 20,345,000, and 21,695,000 respectively. Philadelphia coins have no mintmark, as the U.S. Mint explains for many of its issues. Denver struck Morgan dollars only in 1921, making the D interesting historically, but “only year” does not by itself mean every circulated 1921-D is rare.
Why not an O or CC?
New Orleans and Carson City made older Morgan dollars, not 1921 Morgan dollars. The U.S. Mint says New Orleans last produced Morgan dollars in 1904, while Carson City ceased Morgan production in the nineteenth century. Do not confuse an original 1921 coin with a modern 2021 anniversary issue carrying an O or CC privy mark. Those modern marks honor former mints; they are a different product and metal specification.
Check the listing against the coin
The title, mint-location detail, and reverse photograph should all agree. A seller may enter “Philadelphia” for a no-mintmark 1921 coin, but the photograph still needs to be clear enough to support the identification. A small D can be hard to read; PCGS notes the 1921-D mark can be tiny or shallow. Do not interpret a contact mark or dark spot as a mint letter.
What changes value?
First confirm the exact date and mint. Then compare wear, luster, marks, cleaning, and any authenticated variety with recent completed sales of similar coins. The three 1921 mintages were large; a headline price for an exceptional certified example does not establish the value of a raw circulated one. Metal content and full buying cost set different reference points.
A practical buying sequence
Check both sides and the edge in actual-item photos; compare the reverse mark to a recognized issue image; read the seller’s condition note and return terms; then confirm the current eBay price and availability. If an unusual variety or high grade is central to the asking price, seek an attribution or grading-service opinion before paying a premium.
