1921 Morgan or Peace dollar? Identify the two silver dollars
A 1921 Morgan dollar shows Liberty in a cap and a heraldic eagle inside a wreath. A 1921 Peace dollar shows Liberty with a radiating crown and an eagle perched above the word PEACE. The Mint made 1921 Morgans at Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco; the 1921 Peace dollar was made only at Philadelphia.
Start with the design, not the date
Both coins read 1921 and both are U.S. silver dollars, but they are different series. George T. Morgan designed the older type: Liberty wears a cap, and the reverse eagle is framed by a wreath. Anthony de Francisci designed the Peace dollar: Liberty has a radiating crown and the reverse eagle rests on a mountaintop with PEACE below. The U.S. Mint shows both designs side by side in its historical account.
Why were both made in 1921?
Morgan production resumed after a long pause to replace silver dollars melted under the Pittman Act. Later in 1921, the Mint approved the new Peace design. Philadelphia switched to that design near year-end. A 1921 date alone does not establish which series or its value; identify the design before searching price guides or listings.
What about mintmarks?
Original 1921 Morgan dollars came from Philadelphia (no letter), Denver (D), and San Francisco (S). Look below the wreath on the reverse. The original 1921 Peace dollar was struck only at Philadelphia and has no mintmark. A listing for a “1921-D Peace dollar” or “1921-S Peace dollar” therefore needs correction or a different date. Do not mistake modern 2021 anniversary coins for 1921 originals.
Why does “high relief” matter?
PCGS describes the 1921 Peace dollar as the high-relief first-year issue; the design was lowered for later years because the high-relief dies wore quickly and details could strike weakly. “High relief” on a 1921 Peace dollar identifies the normal design type, not automatically an extraordinary error. Wear and strike quality still need separate assessment.
Do they contain the same silver?
The classic standard silver dollar specification was 26.73 grams at 90% silver. At mint weight, both classic types therefore contain about 0.7734 troy ounce of pure silver. Metal content alone does not price the two issues equally: date-and-mint identity, condition, and collector demand can produce different premiums. Compare the right listings
Search within the identified series and exact mint first. Use actual-item photos of both faces and the edge, then compare similar condition and recent completed sales. A certified, high-grade 1921 Peace dollar is not a fair price reference for an ordinary raw 1921 Morgan. Confirm the live price and shipping terms on eBay before buying.
