Morgan dollar O mintmark: New Orleans coins and the 2021 privy mark
On an original Morgan dollar, an O below the wreath on the reverse identifies the New Orleans Mint, which made Morgan dollars from 1879 through 1904. A 1921 Morgan cannot be an original New Orleans issue. The 2021 anniversary Morgan with an O has a commemorative privy mark and was made at Philadelphia.
Where is the O?
Look on the eagle side below the wreath and above DOLLAR. Examine a sharp image of the whole reverse first, then enlarge the mintmark area. The coin’s date is on Liberty’s side. A dark spot or blurred circle should not be called O without enough detail to identify the letter.
Which Morgan dates can have an O?
The U.S. Mint says New Orleans joined Morgan production in 1879 and made the series through 1904. Thus older dates such as 1889-O, 1890-O, and 1901-O can be genuine New Orleans issues. Morgan production paused after 1904 and returned in 1921 at Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco—not New Orleans.
Why a 2021 O is different
The Mint’s 2021 anniversary Morgan carries an O privy mark honoring the former New Orleans Mint. It is a modern coin struck at Philadelphia, not an original coin from the closed New Orleans facility. The modern mark appears in a raised oval with the O incused; its date and specifications also differ from a nineteenth-century Morgan. Do not mix its prices with those of 1889-O or 1901-O originals.
Does O mean rare?
The letter identifies a mint, not a universal rarity category. Value depends on the exact date, confirmed mint, condition, originality, and buyer demand. One New Orleans issue may be plentiful in worn grades and harder in high grade. Compare completed sales for the exact date-and-mint combination and similar surfaces; never use an exceptional certified sale to price a raw circulated coin.
Check an older raw listing
Match the listing title, date, and O to photographs of the same coin. Inspect both complete faces and edge, plus a sharp reverse close-up. Read descriptions of cleaning, scratches, rim damage, and grade carefully. If a mintmark or date seems altered or the asking price depends on a claimed variety, seek an issue-specific attribution before paying a premium.
A useful three-way check
Confirm the date belongs to the original New Orleans production period, confirm that the reverse mark really is an O, then compare with a trustworthy reference image for that year. This sequence helps prevent a common 1921 Morgan, a modern 2021 anniversary coin, or an unclear reverse photograph from being mistaken for an older O-mint dollar.
