Is a 1922 Peace dollar high relief? Check the claim before buying
The ordinary 1922 Peace dollars made for circulation use the lower-relief design. Very rare 1922 high-relief proofs and experimental pieces exist, but a seller’s label or a dramatic-looking photograph does not establish that a raw coin is one of them. Seek recognized attribution before paying a rarity premium.
The normal 1922 design
The first 1921 Peace dollars used high relief. Production problems led the Mint to reduce the relief for the regular 1922 issue and later years. A normal 1922 dollar can have strong or weak details because strike quality and preservation vary, but it remains the regular low-relief design.
Why do price guides show a 1922 high relief?
NGC documents scarce 1922 high-relief proofs and a separate modified-high-relief experiment. The experimental work did not become the standard circulation design. Price-guide entries for these special pieces do not describe the ordinary 1922, 1922-D, or 1922-S dollars a buyer usually encounters.
A high-relief claim needs more than a close-up
An angled photo, strong contrast, wear, and lighting can exaggerate apparent depth. Do not rely on a single visual trick or an unverified seller assertion. Ask for sharp, full obverse and reverse images, provenance, and a recognized grading-service attribution that names the exact issue. The certification record and holder should match the photographed coin.
Check date and mint first
NGC records ordinary 1922 circulation issues from Philadelphia (no mintmark), Denver (D), and San Francisco (S). The D or S is on the reverse near the eagle’s tail. Record the exact mint before comparing a listing or completed sales; a genuine 1922-S is a different ordinary issue from a 1922 Philadelphia coin, regardless of a high-relief claim.
What if the coin looks unusual?
Preserve it as found. Do not polish, scrape, or chemically test a potentially important coin. Photograph both faces, the edge, and the suspicious detail under more than one lighting angle. If the proposed variety changes the price substantially, seek an experienced specialist or reputable grading service before offering or paying the exceptional price.
Compare normal coins on normal terms
For a raw circulated 1922 dollar, compare actual-item photos, disclosed problems, and recent completed sales for the same date and mint. A rare proof or experimental auction result is not an appropriate benchmark. The silver-content calculator gives a metal reference, but it cannot authenticate a rare attribution.
